The National Diploma in Medical Science is widely recognised by universities as suitable entry to a range of courses. It will give the student background knowledge in areas such as Human Physiology, Microbiology and Genetics. Students will also gain understanding of medical techniques such as X-rays, MRI scanning and ultrasound. They will also learn how cell pathology assists in the diagnosis.

About this course
Four subjects at GCSE grade C or above to include Double Science (or BTEC First Certificate in Science), Mathematics and English Language, or equivalent qualifications at the discretion of College Science Staff. A current satisfactory school report will also be required. Candidates will be asked to attend an interview and pass an aptitude test prior to the course commencing.

Course Overview
The National Diploma in Medical Science is widely recognised by universities as suitable entry to a range of courses. It will give the student background knowledge in areas such as Human Physiology, Microbiology and Genetics. Students will also gain understanding of medical techniques such as X-rays, MRI scanning and ultrasound. They will also learn how cell pathology assists in the diagnosis of a disease. The qualification is equivalent to 3 A-levels but as well as covering theoretical aspects also covers the more practical areas of biomedical science. It is a full time 2 year course run over 3 days per week.

Qualification Aims
The National Diploma in Medical Science is awarded by Edexcel and is an appropriate qualification to gain to entry to university to study subjects such as biomedical science, chemistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary nursing, environmental science, food science, medical imaging, teaching, physiology, nutrition, paramedical science, microbiology (and many others). It is also suitable for those wishing to enter employment as a laboratory technician, medical laboratory technician or for training in specialised laboratories.
Assessments/Examinations
Students are required to obtain credit in a total of eighteen units. There are currently no external examinations.
Cost / Equipment
Students over 19 may be required to pay tuition fees. The course is free to all students under 19 at the start of the course. Free tuition is also available to those in receipt of certain means tested benefits or to their un-waged dependants.
