Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (2007) and The Death of King Arthur (2011) are Modern English retellings of significant medieval poems, by one of Britain’s foremost contemporary poets. This course compares Armitage’s retellings with the original poems, to consider how he chooses to interpret and represent his source material.

Describe the way in which Armitage represents the language, form and style of the medieval poems he has translated.Evaluate the differences between original and translated poem.Pinpoint key passages in the poems and comment on how they differ from or are similar to the original poems.Describe the concerns and issues that the poet may have had in the process of translation and interpretation.
You can bring pen and paper but course notes will be provided. All texts we will look at will also be provided in handouts.
