This module is for registered health care practitioners. Ideally, you should be working within a practice area where unscheduled care takes place, and/or wish to improve your knowledge and understanding of people presenting with minor injuries.

About this course

This module will provide you with a solid theoretical foundation to inform future practice. Areas you will cover include:

Clinical history taking examination and documentation.
Anatomy and physiology relevant to minor injuries.
Musculoskeletal examination.
Assessment of neurological function related to the limbs.
Assessment and management of common minor injury presentations, for example minor wounds, burns, minor head injuries, soft tissue injuries, eye injuries, analgesia relevant to minor injuries.
Whilst this module does include online examination techniques, it is not possible to assess the application of this knowledge within your own clinical setting. If you want to take on an enhanced role caring for patients with minor injuries, this would need to be agreed with your employer, in line with regulatory body guidance and other local and national guidelines.

A University Diploma in Counselling or an equivalent qualification
The ability to work independently (evidenced through a reference letter from a professional person known to you regarding your suitability for this programme).

Module description

About this module

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to critically apply the relevant anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to the care of patients with minor injury, and formulate a diagnosis, treatment and appropriate referral plan for patients presenting with minor injury.

Entry requirements

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

  • IELTS 6.0
  • TOEFL 550 (paper based) 213 (computer based) or 80 (internet based)
  • Pearson Test of Academic English: 51
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass
  • London Tests of English: we accept level 4 for undergraduate courses
  • International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C
  • International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C
