About this course

We’re one of the UK’s leading universities for modern languages, with our courses ranked in the top 10 by the Guardian University Guide 2020 and in the top ten by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 for French and Iberian languages. We also achieved 100 per cent overall satisfaction for French studies in the National Student Survey 2019.

Our flexible BA Modern Languages (French and Spanish) focuses on training world-class language experts. You will need an A-level or equivalent in at least one of the languages, but you can take one of them ab initio. You will study both French and Spanish to a high level, be taught in and gain near-native fluency in both languages and develop your understanding of how languages work, with the opportunity to focus more on one language in the final year.

A Professional Training placement provides you with the opportunity to develop your professional, academic and personal potential, equipping you to be adaptable, resilient, globally minded, confident, entrepreneurial and digitally savvy in the workplace. These qualities are widely recognised by employers and many of our students are offered employment on graduation by their placement provider.

The Professional Training placement year gives our students an insight into their subject and career potential, and early access to professional experience. It can be invaluable in developing work-based skills and helping them secure a graduate career.
Language graduates from the University have gone into a wide range of careers. Our graduates over the last few years have secured roles such as:

Associate Finance Consultant, JDX Consulting
Internal Account Manager, Gamma
Market Researcher, NonStop Medical Devices
Personal Assistant, Ministry of Defence
Project Executive, Language Connect
Quality Manager, Transperfect
Sales and Marketing Executive, Palgrave Higher Education/Macmillan Education.

Applicants with one of these languages at the required grade at A-level can be considered if they would like to study the second language ab initio. Ab initio study will involve additional contact hours and intensive study during the first year of the programme.

Applicants taking an A-level science subject with the Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass the practical element.

Please note: A-level General Studies and A-level Critical Thinking are not accepted.

GCSE or equivalent: English Language at Grade C(4) and Mathematics at Grade C (4) (or equivalent).
