About this course
By the end of the course participants will be able to
o Describe when to use motivational interviewing (and when not to)
o Conduct an in-depth assessment of a client's motivation
o Use advanced listening skills to support clients' self-confrontation
o Use a range of strategies to 'roll with resistance' and manage discord
o Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of behaviour change
The course offers a rare opportunity for health and social care professionals to really develop and fine tune their communication and counselling skills within a safe and nurturing environment. This is not a starter course and is suitable for practioners with some experience.
Prospective participants will be expected to show evidence of attendance at Step 1 and 2 training before attending Step 3.
1. The workshop is taught by 2 highly experienced trainers and restricted to 18 participants. Competence will be assessed on the basis of a recorded case study which will be coded by one assessor according to the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity code (MITI) and assessed in a more narrative way by a second marker. Successful students will be awarded a certificate from the Gestalt Centre in London who recognise it as part of their short course programme.
Short courses at an advanced level are not common. Because of our high requirements we often run the course with small numbers and students tell us they love this!
When we hear from you we will phone you to chat about the ocurse and if you are eligible you can book online. If you are not yet eligible and need to do a level 1 or 2 course first we can sort that out.

Course programme
This is more a workshop than a course and is devised to meet the individual needs of the students so skills are audited and assessed and development exercises used to strive towards excellence. There is xtensive practice around roleplays of working with challenging service users.
The gap between days 2 and 3 is for practice in the workplace and students bring back scenarios for discussion in the group. As the assignment is coded as part of the assessment this process is explained in detail so that students wishing to submit assignments are well prepared. The closing date for assignments is around 12 weeks from the end of the course to allow for full skill development. Because of the style of running the workshop it is not possible to provide a programme here.
