Overview
The Master of Research (MRes) in Finance offered by the School of Economics and Finance (SEF) is a research-oriented postgraduate programme for students who already hold an MSc in finance or a related field and who may wish to progress to doctoral study at Queen Mary (or elsewhere). Students build on their postgraduate training by completing two PhD-level module sequences in macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, or financial economics (required for MRes Finance); covering core theories and methods as well as areas of active research in the School. Students also conduct original research to fulfil the substantial dissertation component of the degree, which can form the basis of later doctoral work.
The MRes can be pursued as a stand-alone degree or as the first year of a planned PhD, and when appropriate a conditional offer of admission to the doctoral programme will be made. Generous financial assistance is available for candidates with demonstrated potential for a successful research career.

Structure

The MRes Finance requires one year of full-time study.

Semester 1

In Semester 1, MRes students must register for both modules from List 1 (two modules totalling 30-credits):

List 1

  • ECOM128 Topics in Financial Economics A
  • ECOM129 Topics in Financial Economics B

At most one 15-credit module from List 2:

List 2

  • ECOM126 Topics in Econometrics A
  • ECOM127 Topics in Econometrics B

Finally, at least one and at most two 15-credit modules from List 3 (depending on selections from List 2):

List 3

  • ECOM130 Topics in Macroeconomics A
  • ECOM131 Topics in Macroeconomics B
  • ECOM132 Topics in Microeconomics A
  • ECOM133 Topics in Microeconomics B
Semester 2

In Semester 2, MRes students register for two15-credit modules from the following list:

  • ECOM110 Advanced Topics in Econometrics
  • ECOM112 Advanced Topics in Macroeconomics
  • ECOM113 Advanced Topics in Microeconomics
  • ECOM111 Advanced Topics in Financial Economics

Semester B modules must follow on from Semester A choices (i.e. students must have attended at least one A or B 'Topics' module for a particular stream in Semester A to attend the corresponding 'Advanced Topics' module in Semester B).

During Semester 2 and the Summer term students complete a 90-credit dissertation (approximately 15,000 words) under the supervision of a member of academic staff. The dissertation is submitted in August of the year following entry to the programme, and can form the basis of later doctoral work.

In total students earn 60+30+90=180 credits over the course of the MRes programme.
