Course summary
This course is designed to advance analytical skills in the core subject areas of Civil Engineering including Structural Analysis, Sustainability and Hydraulics. Application of modern IT techniques to complex problem solving is a theme that runs through the course. This course also covers broader issues of project and process management in Civil Engineering.

The Internship Course seeks to provide the same rigorous and challenging programme of professional practice as the MSc Civil and Environmental Engineering but has the added advantage of including a 6 months internship incorporated into the period of study. This makes it ideal for students seeking to add a practical dimension to their studies and understand the demands of workplace supervision and management. Internship opportunities exist throughout the civil and construction industry within the UK.

Professional Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES). Successful completion of this course satisfies the academic requirements for the grade Member.

Course programme

Course detail
This course is designed to advance analytical skills in the consideration of the interrelationship of current environmental issues and civil engineering. The course links these studies to the core subject areas of Civil Engineering including Structural Analysis, Sustainability, Geotechnics and Hydraulics.

Whilst there is the opportunity to complete empirical study the application of modern IT techniques to complex problem solving is a theme that runs through the course. The course also covers broader issues of project and process management in Civil Engineering. The internship will come at the end of the course following the successful completion of all taught modules.
During the Internship you will work for 6 months with an employer. The internship allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge to a practical work-based situation. It will allow you to improve existing skills and acquire new ones, explore various career opportunities, network and be part of a team. This will improve your understanding of the world of work and professional practice in the workplace. It will also enhance your career prospects, allowing you to focus on your potential career path.

Modules
Advanced Structural Analysis

Module summaries
Advanced Structural Analysis
The module provides a programme of study covering theoretical and computational aspects of the advanced structural analysis combined with the Finite Element Method (FEM). It also provides a primary analysing tool which can overcome the limitation of classical calculation and encourages design creativity. Whilst the focus of study will be on steel structures the implications for other types of structure will also be considered.
Construction Project Management
The focus of this module is on developing awareness of the issues which need to be considered during construction projects and procurements.
Advanced geotechnical engineering
This module provides in-depth content which covers advanced geotechnical modelling and demonstration on real-world applications. The module also presents innovative and cutting-edge geotechnical methods and experimental tests that are used for practical applications in geotechnical engineering such as advanced technics for stabilisation of slopes ad soil cuts.
Advanced Structural Design
This module has been created to provide you with the skills you require to safely analyse and design multi-story concrete structures. You will tackle civil engineering problems and design solutions (in groups and individually) in a way which reflects industry environment whilst working on developing enhanced understanding of the underpinning design codes.
Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering
This module covers concepts and design methods required to analyse hydrological processes and floodplain hydraulics. It also addresses the computational methods for calculating flows in open channels and closed conduits and hydraulic and hydrologic routing in rivers. The application of these techniques will be explored for:
water supply
watershed studies
floodplain computation
flood control
urban hydrology
stormwater design
computer modelling.
Research Method for Civil and Built Environment
This module provides in-depth knowledge on specific tools and theories to develop your research skills at master’s level in the area of civil engineering. You will learn how to carry out an extensive literature review of a topic, selected in agreement with the assigned supervisor. Additionally, you will also learn to design research questions, their methodology and aims.
Dissertation
This module aims to provide you with an opportunity to develop research skill proportionate with postgraduate study whilst investigating an area of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering or Construction Management.
