Our Masters in Civil Engineering is aimed at engineers who want to broaden and deepen their technical knowledge of specialised civil engineering areas and develop a wider perspective on the issues facing the civil engineering industry. The part-time programme is designed to build on the knowledge and skills already developed, introducing advanced concepts and theories to challenge your problem solving and critical evaluation capabilities.

This course explores the complex roles and responsibilities of civil engineers in relation to social, natural and built environments, assessing how economic constraints can influence project management and decision making.

Research and design also play key parts in this comprehensive course, which will challenge you to design creatively and apply engineering modelling and analysis methods to projects. You’ll have the opportunity to grow your skillset by linking theory with practice in a variety of assignments, reports and design processes, enhancing your literacy and risk management abilities along the way.

Postgraduate studies in civil engineering are ideal if you would like to broaden and deepen your technical knowledge of specialised civil engineering areas and develop a wider perspective and understanding of the issues facing the civil engineering industries. The course is designed for those who have already graduated with a civil engineering or engineering-related degree.

As a graduate of this programme you will have the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills including problem solving, research skills, analysis of complex sets of information, use concepts and theories to make engineering judgments, critical thinking, creativity, communication, team work, commercial awareness and health and safety.

What Can I Do With This Qualification?
A civil engineering degree will prepare you for a career in the construction industry as well as in the wider business, management and financial sectors. Recent graduates have been employed by civil and structural engineering practices, local authorities, government agencies and civil engineering contractors. Civil and structural engineers have the opportunity to work on buildings of all kinds as well as transport and communication infrastructures. These can include bridges, roads, tunnels, canals and other large constructions. They also work for employers involved in the production, storage and distribution of electricity, gas and water. Opportunities are available with employers both in the UK and overseas.

You should hold at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2.1) in Civil Engineering. Applicants with a Lower Second Class Honours degree (2.2) in Civil Engineering will be considered on a case by case basis and evidence of significant relevant learning/work experience following graduation will be expected. Applicants with other qualifications equivalent to the above that are deemed acceptable to the University will be considered.

You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Our programme has been expertly developed to give a broad overview of the advanced civil engineering discipline, including influencing issues and challenges, such as economic constraints and professional and ethical responsibilities.
Lessons are taught in small groups, maximising opportunities for personal tuition and contact with staff.
As well as small group learning and support, the University has excellent libraries, 24/7 IT facilities and campus-wide WiFi for all students.
English language support will be provided via a dedicated module that focuses on improving students’ English language skills, especially in relation to engineering.

Teaching, Learning And Assessment

Our Civil Engineering MSc course is delivered through a variety of teaching and learning methods to give you the fullest experience. In many cases, we focus on case studies and apply academic theory to real life scenarios using a blended style of teaching. You can expect structured lectures, tutor-led individual and group sessions, discussions and seminars, as well as online learning over the summer periods when students are working on their dissertations.

You’ll be assessed throughout the course in a number of different ways, including assignments, individual and group presentations, discussions, reports, written and oral examinations and design processes such as calculations, specifications, drawings and models.
