About this course
Minimum entry requirement for a Masters degree is normally an Honours Degree or equivalent. Candidates who do not meet this standard will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Not necessary to have a first degree in Int. Politics or related, but evidence that you can complete the course successfully is needed.
Non-native English speakers are required to take a test of academic English language proficiency with required minimum levels equating to an IELTS score of 7.0; a TOEFL score of 610 (paper based test), 100 (internet based test) or 250 (computer based test) with an essay rating of 5.5

This degree provides a specialist introduction to the advanced study of international relations theory. The main aim of the course is to introduce students to the core theories and concepts that shape the practices of global politics. It does so through critical engagement with the debates that have shaped - and continue to shape - the academic study of international relations; through an assessment of key themes and concepts in the light of various case studies from international politics; and by evaluating key debates in international relations in the light of contemporary debates in the philosophy of the social sciences.
This MSc Econ International Relations Theory degree provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge, understanding, qualities, skills and other attributes in the following areas:
- The key debates in the history of ideas about International Relations;
- The dominant theories and approaches to academic International Relations since 1919;
- The key theories and concepts in International Relations as viewed through the prism of a variety of case studies in twentieth century international politics; and,
- The core debates in international theory as viewed in the light of contemporary considerations on the role and status of theory in the philosophy of the social sciences.
