Music
Music integrates the three components of performing, composing and appraising through the study of various musical traditions. At AS the Western Classical tradition is explored through the study of orchestral music. Modern musical idioms are also encountered through Musical Theatre or Jazz, Rock and Pop.At A2, a study of twentieth century music through a detailed set work provides a broad basis for entrance to university and musical careers. The study is both practical and theoretical.

AS Units (Year One)
MU1 Performing (15%) Practical Exam
A performance of between eight and ten minutes on your chosen
instrument as a solo or as an ensemble.

MU2 Composing (15%) Course work
Two contrasting compositions lasting between four and eight
minutes in total.

MU3 Appraising (20%) Exam
Part 1 (12%) Listening exam based on extracts from a chosen area
of study.

Part 2 (8%) Listening exam on dictation, keys, chords and cadences.

A2 Units (Year Two)
Students can choose to progress to the full Advanced Level (A2)
in the second year of study. This contains three modules:

MU4 Performing (15% - 20%) Practical Exam
A performance of between ten and twelve minutes on your chosen
instrument as a solo or as an ensemble. Optional 5% specialism -
one further piece reflecting a chosen area of study.

MU5 Composing (15% - 20%) Course work
Two contrasting compositions lasting between six and ten minutes
in total. Optional 5% specialism - one further free composition.

MU6 Appraising (15% - 20%) Exam
Part 1 Listening exam based on unfamiliar extracts of 20th
Century music.

Part 2 Listening and written exam on a chosen set work.
Optional 5% specialismThe full Advanced Level in Music provides the basis for students who wish to proceed to Higher Education to study Music. It is an essential grounding for those who wish to work as performers, composers, music broadcasters or in arts administration. Music is also a desirable option for many different degree courses and employers as it shows the ability to perform under pressure, work with others and perform to a high standard.Music combines well with other arts subjects, particularly Performing Arts. It also is a popular choice with those who are studying Mathematics and the sciences.
