About this course

We are looking for learners with a keen interest in drawing, painting and design that have a satisfactory portfolio of work and a minimum of two GCSEs at Grade F or above. Mature learners who can demonstrate an appropriate portfolio are also welcome.

What are the Course Details?

The National Award in Art & Design is a one year programme in Art and Design and is equivalent to 1 A' Level. The course enables learners to experience a range of art and design disciplines to learn a broad range of skills and techniques. Learners who successfully complete the one year programme may progress into a second year and complete either a National Certificate in Art & Design (equivalent to 2 A' Levels) or National Diploma in Art and design (equivalent to 3 A' Levels) depending on the number of units achieved. The Certificate and Diploma courses will extend previously gained knowledge and learners will develop a greater sense of independence and creativity working towards a specialist subject area.


Is the Course for Me?
If you are creative and enjoy drawing, designing and making and if you would like to work in the broad areas of Graphics, Textiles, Fashion or 3 Dimensional Design then this course is for you.


What are the Entry Requirements?
The course has been developed for learners who have achieved 4 GCSE's at grades A - C, including an Art or Design subject plus one that demonstrates written English.

Applications are also welcome from learners who have completed a BTEC First Diploma qualification. Mature learners who present a portfolio of work are also welcome and entry requirements may be flexible depending on an initial skills assessment. All applicants will be required to attend an interview and present a portfolio of work that demonstrates their abilities to the required standard.


What will I Learn?
This is a highly practical course where you will be introduced to a broad range of skills, materials and techniques. The course is made up of practical and theory projects and workshops giving learners the opportunity to expand their horizons within the field of Art and Design. Assignments on the course vary in timescale depending on the nature of the project.

National Certificate/ Diploma
Following a successful first year learners will be able to specify a chosen pathway in the second year specialising in one of the four specialist areas:
  • Graphic Design
  • Fashion Design
  • Textile Design
  • 3 Dimensional Design

Several units will be covered within the subject specialisms as well as additional units such as specialist subject investigation, computers in art and design and design method.


How will I Learn?
Your time on the course will usually be spent in your own group studio or specialist workshops and will be split between tutor led studio time and your own individual study time. You will be expected to provide your own equipment with the exception of specialist equipment. An equipment guide will be given at the beginning of the course. You will be taught by a range of subject specialists in order to expand your knowledge and expertise.


How will I be Assessed?
Your progress will be measured in a number of ways including practical projects, written assignments and internal assessment throughout the course. You will receive information about this through verbal feedback and written feedback from an assignment or project, and grading of your work. Assessment of student work is monitored by an external verifier from the examining body.


What Enrichments are Available?
The National Award, Certificate and Diploma qualifications will allow flexibility within the programme to study additional subjects and take part in enrichment activities. A range of enrichment activities exist for learners to tap into such as visits to Alton Towers, team and sporting activities and creative options such as life drawing and website design.


Are there any Trips or Visits?
You will be required to attend trips that form part of an assignment. Trips in the past have included visits to major cities and local businesses or places of interest such as museums and galleries to develop knowledge and understanding.


Is there any Work Experience?
Learners will have the opportunity to experience client-based projects within the course.


What can I Progress to?
Learners completing a Certificate or Diploma may wish to progress into Higher Education in order to develop their skills further and enter the creative employment sector.

Learners completing an Award may wish to diversify into other Level 3 qualification areas.

The course prepares learners in the best possible way, learning from professionals in all areas and lecturers who continue to work in the Art & Design Industry passing on current trends. Within the Design Specialisms learners will also be introduced to other units of study, including professional practice and personal development to build their understanding of their specialist vocation.
