It is suitable for those who wish to access this training with a view to progression towards further qualifications or for those who wish to study this programme in order to complement other programmes.

Course content:
The course consists of three units covering:

â ¦ Unit 01 The principles of infection prevention and control
â ¦ Unit 02 Causes and spread of infection
â ¦ Unit 03 Cleaning, decontamination and waste management

Course aims
â ¦ familiarise you with infection control legislation and policies
â ¦ develop your understanding of the causes of infections, the conditions in which they thrive and the ways that they can be spread
â ¦ develop your understanding of the methods of cleaning and waste disposal that help prevent
the spread of infection
â ¦ introduce you to the hand washing techniques and personal protective equipment you should use to help prevent the spread of infection.

Course structure:
The course consists of three units covering:

â ¦ Unit 01 The principles of infection prevention and control
â ¦ Unit 02 Causes and spread of infection
â ¦ Unit 03 Cleaning, decontamination and waste management

Assessment procedure:
Candidates will be provided with course materials for the programme. The learning materials contain the knowledge needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course and activities to allow candidates to practise their skills and test their learning.

Candidates work through the learning materials and complete assessments for each unit. Learning activities and assessments are based on a combination of knowledge and skills learned on the programme and work-based activities and experience. On successful completion of the 3 units a certificate will be awarded.

Tutor Support
Each candidate will have access to a tutor who will support them throughout the programme. Your tutor will agree a schedule of work with you that suit your particular circumstances. Typically the programme can be completed in 12-20 weeks. You will be entitled to receive a minimum of 5 hours of 1:1 support throughout the programme. You will be able to contact your tutor and/or college for help, support and guidance at any stage of the course. Your tutor will provide you with detailed feedback on your work.

Certificate in Prevention and Control Infection Control. The qualification is accredited by a nationally recognised awarding body â€" NCFE.

Many part-time students at South Tyneside College do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, depending on the course and the number of hours a week you study, you may be eligible for an Adult Learners†Grant.
