Course programme

The course will focus on sugarcraft and the production of novelty cakes, linked to seasonal anniversaries. Students will be encouraged to develop an eye for design as well as learning the skills required to produce a professional cake. The qualification will comprise of four units: Unit 1 - Use materials tools and equipment to develop craft techniques. Learners will explore different materials and develop an understanding of the visual and textural qualities of them. They will develop their techniques for manipulation of different materials and develop the use of tools needed whilst ensuring that they observe the health, hygiene and safety aspects of the materials, tools and techniques used. Unit 2 - Investigate creative enterprise and employment opportunities. Learners will research enterprises in their chosen craft area and understand what makes them successful. Theyll also explore employment opportunities, identify their own strengths and areas for development and devise an action plan to meet their career aspirations. Unit 3 - Develop craft ideas. Learners will research and compare sources and contexts to inspire their ideas for craft. Learners will present their ideas to others to gain feedback on which to adapt or improve their idea. They will develop their ideas by researching, debating and adapting before selecting and justifying their final choice. Unit 4 - Create, present and evaluate final craft item. In this unit learners will plan, produce, cost and evaluate their own craft work. Learners will prepare the tools, materials and equipment required to produce their craft piece whilst maintaining a safe working environment. Learners will have the opportunity to display their finished piece in an appropriate way or setting for others to see. Learners will also evaluate the whole creative process and record any issues/challenges they faced and any areas for improvement. You will develop your existing skills using royal icing, flowerpaste, modelling paste, pastillage and chocolate. You will use the principles of colour, line, texture, shape and form to produce a range of samples. Using these skills you will design, plan, cost and produce 3 cakes of saleable quality linked to seasonal anniversaries. You will record your ongoing work in a portfolio, evaluate your ongoing progress.The qualification awarded is the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Crafts upon successful completion of 90 hours of study/practical work, and the production of a course portfolio demonstrating the work undertaken. The work will be assessed by the course tutor and there are no examinations. Assessments will be by questions and answers, tutor observation of students progress and response to questioning. Your portfolio will be submitted for final award by the examining body, (NCFE). These will be returned to you within a few days of submission.
