Overview
This is another package ideal for complete career changers. If you have spent the last good few years in an office or similar and have always had the benefit of getting people in to work around the home then we are guessing that you are going to need some basic and advanced skills training before moving on to the gas course. This package combines pipe-work, site-skills and gas training so that you will have a smooth transition on to your next steps.

If you think that your knowledge of pipe-work and site related skills needs some work and that this is the perfect package of learning for you, then we would recommend that you start with the Pipe-Work Skills course first and then move on to the Site-Skills course after.

What You’ll Learn

If you are looking to become a Gas Safe registered Engineer and you have NO plumbing qualifications and NO previous experience relating to this area of work or similar, then this package of training is the ideal starting point for you. We have devised this package of learning as we feel that it will give you lots of back ground essential skills that are associated with gas work; these are skills that you probably don’t even realise that you need when you are undertaking gas related work.

During the period of learning, which is 5 weeks, you will undertake 3 different areas of learning.

  • Pipe-work Skills
  • Site Skills
  • Domestic Gas Safety Training

Stage 1 - Pipe-work Skills: Copper Pipe And Low Carbon Steel

This aspect of the process to becoming gas safe registered will ensure that you have the pipe skills required to ensure that the standards and safety of any gas work you undertake is spot on.

It is crucial that you are able to ensure that any pipe-work you undertake as a Gas Engineer is fail safe as any errors could prove fatal. To give you the best possible chance of completing Able Skills Gas Training and Assessment processes successfully, this course will provide the following:

  • Cutting and measuring copper tube accurately
  • Pipe-work preparation for soldering
  • Soldering techniques / Practicing soldering / soldering assessments
  • X and Z dimension calculations
  • Cutting assembling and soldering practice frames to specific dimensions
  • How to assemble compression fittings / compression fitting assessments
  • The use of different types of jointing pastes for compression jointing
  • Cutting assembling and jointing compression fittings frames to specific dimensions
  • Cutting and treading low carbon steel pipe
  • Jointing steel pipe
  • The use of different fittings on steel pipe
  • All pipe-work is tested to 3 bar for 3 min

Your competence will be assessed under Bpec criteria and once you have shown your competence in this area you will have much more confidence once you move onto the Gas course.

Stage 2 – Site-Skills Training

This Gas Site-Skills course has been put together following consultation with the Gas Engineers that we use when we place our gas portfolio students. Over the past couple of years they have identified that some individuals lack certain skills or confidence in some areas and so as a training provider, we have listened to their comments and from this, worked with them to devise this course.

Throughout this Site-Skills course which is predominantly practical, we will endeavour to cover training in the most common aspects of gas related work so that you are completely prepared for most eventualities, providing you with the essential skills for working on pipe-work in industry

The course will cover:

  • How an open vented heating and hot water system works
  • How to drain down and decommission the systems
  • How to convert open vented heating systems to a sealed heating system
  • How to mark out the position of a boiler using a boiler template
  • How to drill a hole through masonry for the boiler flue and fix a boiler jig to a masonry wall
  • How to assemble, mark out and hang radiators
  • How to lift correctly, mark out and notch floor joists
  • How to install both copper and plastic pipework under a suspended floor
  • How to fill and vent a system of air
  • How to convert sealed heating system with an open vented cylinder to a combination boiler system

Stage 3 – 3 Week Domestic Gas Safety Training – Bpec Foundation Certificate

This 3 week long Gas course is essential training and assessment for all candidates looking to gain access to the Gas Industry. Gas training is a mandatory part of becoming Gas Safe registered.

Week 1 - This week will provide you with a great insight into the Gas industry and present you with an understanding of the guidelines and regulations which currently govern the ACS scheme.

During this week of gas training, we will cover basic heating systems and heating controls, gas appliance functions and the basic principles of flues and combustion to give candidates the knowledge required to move forward to the next aspect of this Gas course. In addition, we will cover:

  • Legislation
  • Tightness Testing
  • Pipework requirements

Week 2 - As you progress through the weeks, the gas course will develop and you will receive training in:

  • Gas safety controls
  • Pipe sizing
  • Gas rates / Heat inputs
  • Flueing

During week 2 you will undertake written exams and practical assessments.

Week 3 – You will be trained on:

  • Appliance installation and servicing
  • Ventilation
  • Unsafe situations

Again, there will be written exams and practical assessments. Upon successful completion of this week, you will be provided with a Bpec Foundation Portfolio and guidance for completion.

How You’ll Learn

Stage 1 - Pipe-work Skills: Copper Pipe And Low Carbon Steel

This is a 5 day (or 2 weekends) hands-on practical course where you will be undertaking a variety of pipe-work related tasks. The Pipe-Work Skills course will ensure that you meet the standards expected of a Gas Engineer, bearing in mind that any faulty joints or pipe work can potentially be fatal. The course will also set you up very well for the 3 Week Gas training programme.

Stage 2 – Site-Skills

The Site-Skills course will ensure that you are completely competent to undertake various aspects of work that may be required ahead of a gas appliance installation. It will benefit you particularly well when you are completing your gas portfolio under supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer – this is the time when you will realise the benefits of this course and when you will find that you do know how to run pipe-work, you can lift and replace floorboards without damage, you can assemble radiators without asking for help and you are confident to pick up a drill and bore through masonry in preparation for a flue. These skills will save you time and money and you will be able to undertake your gas services and gas appliance installations in a competent and complete manner.

Stage 3 – Gas Safe Training – Managed Learning Programme

The Domestic Gas Safety Training course will provide you with the essential knowledge that is required in order for you to work safely on a number of appliances. This Managed Learning Programme will cover both theory and practical training in one of our gas centres which are all fully equipped with boilers, cookers, fires and meters to ensure that training on the most common appliances is covered in detail. This course is very in depth and the level of knowledge that you will have once you have finished will astound you; the course is supported by very comprehensive handouts and you will finish the course with a portfolio to take away and work on in order to prove to us that you are competent in all areas of gas work.

Courses Open To You After

If you are looking for something much more comprehensive which will give you plumbing skills along with a qualification then we recommend that you consider undertaking a City & Guilds 6035-02 at level 2 – this will give you a recognised plumbing qualification and ultimately give you access to other areas of work within a domestic setting.

Additional Info

Once you have successfully completed this package of training, you will need to prove competence working under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer. You will be required to complete a portfolio (provided by Able Skills) detailing the various jobs you have undertaken, supported by photographic evidence and signed by your Gas Safe registered Engineer. Once you have done this, you will then need to return to Able Skills to undertake your formal gas assessments (ACS): CCN1 (Core Gas Safety) and Appliances.

Able Skills can arrange all aspects of training, portfolio and assessments for you and they are all available individually or as packages – please see related courses or call for more information.

Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI gas registration in Great Britain on 1 April 2009. It is now the official industry stamp for gas safety.

If you would like to view the facilities at Able Skills, please feel free to visit us at any time. We are open 7 days every week and encourage visitors to the centre. You will not need an appointment, just turn up (08.30 – 16.30) and we will show you around.
