New Forest Landscapes & Close Ups with Heather Angel

Event Description:

We are delighted to announce that professional nature photographer Heather Angel has agreed to join us to explore the New Forest in Hampshire on a series of full day practical workshops. Heather has been one of the founders of professional wildlife photography in the UK and a major presence in the industry for several decades. Heather is an internationally renowned wildlife photographer who regularly travels from the poles to the tropics. Her work has been recognised with many international awards. She communicates her enthusiasm for photographing the natural world via her prodigious writing and lectures. For several years she has been one of the head judges in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition.

We have selected the New Forest for its large and varied range of natural history subjects throughout the year. We will concentrate on close-up and macro photography, an area in which Heather excels. We will have specialised equipment such as ring-flash and macro lenses available for use by those who are new to the field. We will also look at the wider picture by looking for different opportunities to photograph the Forests varied landscapes. If we are lucky we may even have the chance to see some of the different species of deer that inhabit the woodland.

We will remain on location all day and the cost will include sandwich lunch and refreshments, as well as expert tuition from Heather.

Requirements

What to Bring:

  • You will be outside for a much of the day so you should be dressed to suit the season and weather.
  • We suggest you have a water-proof coat in case of rain. Shelter is available but you should note that all exhibits are outside and hence can not be viewed while using the shelter.
  • Refreshments will be provided on arrival at lunch time and during the afternoon. However you should note this is a private location and there is no opportunity to purchase additional food and drink therefore it is suggested that you bring anything specific you require.
  • You are welcome to bring whatever photographic equipment you believe may be suitable. There is little walking involved and you will always be very close to your vehicle.
  • Digital users should be as much memory as possible as we find people usually take more pictures than they anticipate.
  • We suggest you ensure your batteries are fully charged and you bring spares if you have them.
  • Download and battery charging facilities will be available during the day if required.
  • For film users we recommend ISO 100 or 200 film in normal conditions, although ISO 400 may be useful in poor lighting conditions.
  • Fill in flash might be useful in some conditions e.g. where the subject is backlit.
  • A SLR camera together with standard, wide angle and telephoto lens would be ideal. A zoom lens covering the range up to 300mm will be ample for most situations and shorter focal length lenses will be suitable for close-ups. The layout of the collection even means non-SLR users are able to get good opportunities.
  • A tripod or monopod might be useful for use with long focal length lenses.
  • We have access to a supply of spare memory, film, batteries and cleaning materials if required.
