What are the Course Details?
The course is designed to provide training in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

This course is one year at North Lindsey College with work placements provided by one of our industrial partners. Following successful completion of the course, it is anticipated that each learner will be offered a contract with an engineering employer in order to complete the final two years of the Advanced Apprenticeship Framework qualification.

Each Apprentice is sponsored by North Lindsey College, and receives a performance based payment each term of up to £300 with a bonus payment of £200 on successful completion of all training requirements.

Is the Course for Me?
Applicants must be:
  • determined, enthusiastic and committed
  • at least 16 years of age
  • interested in either mechanical, electrical or control engineering

What will I Learn?
The training is a part of the requirements for an Advanced Apprenticeship Framework in Engineering which covers:

NVQ 2 Performing Engineering Operations (Practical) with the following units:

Mandatory Training:
  • Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering
  • Using and Communicating Technical Information

Electrical Training:
  • Wiring and Testing Electrical Equipment and Circuits
  • Electrical Panel Wiring
  • Maintaining Electrical Systems and Devices

Mechanical Training:
  • Maintaining Mechanical Systems and Devices
  • Maintaining Fluid Power Systems (Pneumatics and Hydraulics)
  • Producing Components using Hand Fitting Techniques

Learners will also study the BTEC National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (Level 3). (The BTEC National Certificate is a recognised qualification which is equivalent to two 'A' Levels).

Learners will also undertake Functional Skills training in IT, Communications & Application of Number.

How will I Learn?
This course has a substantial practical emphasis with one full day and evening of academic study on the BTEC National Certificate.

The course is delivered by staff who possess both professional and educational qualifications. Staff also have a wealth of industrial experience gained from employment that enables them to relate theory to practice. As part of the course you will undertake both assignments and practical activities.

A wide range of materials, including photocopied notes and books are made available during guided learning periods and the College has open access library and computer facilities. Learners must provide their own files, writing paper, materials, drawing instruments, and scientific calculator. (Overalls and safety boots may be required.)

How will I be Assessed?
The course consists predominantly of on-going assessments and portfolio building.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
There will be related work experience at one or more of the supporting engineering companies during holiday periods, e.g. February half-term, Easter and Summer holidays.

What can I Progress to?
Successful completion of the course will provide the opportunity to progress to employment and a further two years training to complete the Advanced Apprenticeship Framework. There may be the opportunity to continue onto Higher Education in Engineering such as a Higher National Certificate or a Degree.

Previous learners have successfully gained employment within the industry and progressed onto higher level qualifications.
