A non-profit organization, also called a non-profit organization (from the English profit, ie "profit") or non-profit entity, is an organization that, by statute, is not intended to make profits and reinvests entirely the profits generated for their own organizational purposes. The structure of non-profit organizations was born in the second half of the twentieth century, mainly in the economically more advanced countries, supported by the increased social attention for solidarity activities, the improvement of general economic conditions, and the spread of the mass media. , which have facilitated the knowledge of particular situations of economic, health, social and political hardship. At the same time, associations of voluntary people were born, motivated by the perception of inadequacy of the response of the more developed states at an economic level to situations of social need both inside the states themselves and externally, in the less developed states, and aimed at solving or mitigating such situations. Non-profit organizations do not distribute profits to members, which are instead destined to third parties; these organizations have a commercial activity limited to the social purposes only and therefore they are different from cooperatives and associations, in which there is legitimately an indirect personal interest of the members. Italian legislation has regulated five types of private organizations that operate without economic purposes with solidarity purposes: non-governmental and voluntary organizations, social cooperatives,
