This course is designed for nurses who want to move into more advanced roles with greater responsibility. It encourages you to use research – your own and that carried out by others – to support your approach to your practice. Your PG Diploma will have given you the confidence to take an evidence-based approach to the care you deliver. Now you can take this one step further, developing research skills and putting them to use in a major project.
A completed MSc will indicate to actual and potential employers that you have the abilities and characteristics required of nurses working in more advanced positions. As such, some graduates move on to more senior nursing roles, while others pursue a clinical-academic career.
Registered Nurse positions in a range of leading NHS Trusts and with other health care providers.
Applicants must have been awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Nursing with Registration (all fields) with an overall average mark of 55% or above (or overseas equivalent). Applicants are also required to have studied research methods at a postgraduate level.
If you do not meet the normal entry requirements or you have only the minimum academic standard you should pay particular attention in preparing your supporting statement and CV to ensure that you draw attention to evidence of potential success for dissertation work.

Course programme
To join this course you need a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing undertaken with registration as an Adult, Children’s or Mental Health nurse. You’ll study part-time while continuing to work in your clinical role.
The dissertation is the only module on this course. It is an opportunity to carry out research that’s directly related to the clinical work you do or a wider service provision you’re involved with.
You can develop your own research question, or your tutor can help you decide on a suitable project.
Teaching
You only need to attend one compulsory taught session at the beginning of your course. There are optional teaching days throughout the year and you will organise your one-to-one sessions with your supervisor to suit you.
While you can meet in person, Skype, email and phone conversations are also an option if travelling to our campus would be difficult.
Course format and assessmentYou will be assessed solely on your dissertation. There are four options for this project: an analysis of an area of healthcare provision, an empirical study, a systematic review, or a clinically focused project.Course accreditation
King’s College is regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
