INTRODUCTION
The course is equivalent to 4 grades C or above at GCSE for progression to the Advanced Physical Education course, other level 3 courses or employment. It is for students with lively enquiring minds who wish to work in some aspect of sport.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
During this course you will
· Develop your knowledge & understanding of sport
· Develop your skills, knowledge & understanding in contexts that are relevant to employment situations
· Develop your ability to work autonomously & effectively in a sports context
· Develop your understanding of the practicalities of delivering sports opportunities to the public
CONTENT
You will study 4 mandatory & 2 optional units:
1. The sporting environment
2. Health, safety & prevention of injury in sport
3. Effective sports leadership
4. The body in action
5. Social issues in sport
6. Sport skills
7. Lifestyle & fitness
8. Outdoor activities
9. Career planning for the sports industry
10. Work experience in the sports industry
ASSESSMENT
All Units are assessed by production of an assignment or project. You will need to be good at meeting coursework deadlines to succeed in this course.
HOW WILL I STUDY?
You will be expected to learn in a wide variety of ways; through formal teaching, work experience, visits, watching DVDs, group work & practical activities. You may need to interview professionals, do research in the library or on the Internet. Sometimes you will have very practical activities to do. Always you will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning.
You will have a borrowers card for the library to help with your research and a password for the college computer network and Internet.
The course will consist of 12 hours of formal lessons and a minimum of 10 hours of self-study each week. Lessons will be delivered in the colleges new, state of the art, sports centre.
