Thames Gateway College Information:
This course runs at Thames Gateway College at CEME.
Study Method:
Classrooms attendance, private study and reading, attendance at Race Events and vehicle tests.
Duration :Full time study over the duration of 2 years or part time study over 3 years (one day a week.)
Who the Course is For:
The Foundation Degree combines academic learning, industrial knowldege and professional competence. The programme teaches learners to utilise analytical techniques, theoretical modelling and practical invetsigation to solve vocational and work based problems. A Foundation Degree is intended for self motivated individuals looking to enhance their promotional prosepcts or to further their education.
Assessment:
By course work, field assignments, practical investigations and projects, phase tests and end of unit examinations.
Course Leads To:
Whilst a Foundation Degree is becoming a widely recognized HE qualification, it also serves as a natural progression to an Honours Degree Programme. The programme allows direct access to the BEng in Engineering and TGC plans to offer a specialist B.Eng in Motorsport Engineering starting in 2010.
Entry Requirements:
An appropriate technical certificate in a Mechanical Engineering or Vehicle technology subject equivalent to 120 UCAS Tariff Points (AVCE, GNVQ,BTEC Nat Cert or Diploma), an A/AS Level Profile including Mathematics - min 120 UCAS points or and Access to Higher Education or Bridging Certificate in Engineering. Students who have an appropriate trade qualification(City & Guilds/EMTA/IMI) at Level 3 may need to complete a bridging course.
Content:
The course combines 3 elements: The Motorsport Industry, Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering & Practical Work Based Learning. The aim is to develop successful learners into professional engineering roles such as vehicle design specialists, component development engineers, vehicle preparation & race set up engineers and team managers. The focus is on studying and understanding core engineering skills in maths, vehicle systems and automotive engineering disiciplines while gaining practical experience of race vehicle set up and preparation through vehicle projects & competing in motorsport events. There is an emphasis on the practical use of advanced tools for data gathering, analysis and performance simulation.
Units Include: Engineering Maths 1, Engineering Principles & Techniques, Vehicle Engineering 1, Rules and Regulations, Business Management, Motorsport Vehicle Prep & inspection, Development of Employability Skills, Aerodynamic Design, Engineering Maths 2, Motorsport Materials Engineering, Motorsport Project, Motorsport Professional Practice and Logistics, Vehicle Engineering 2 and Vehicle Systems Control and Telemetry.
