Summary:

In September 2000, new qualifications were introduced for the initial training of teachers in the lifelong learning sector in England. It continues to be a requirement for teachers of English (literacy), Mathematics (numeracy) and ESOL (literacy and language) to gain subject specific qualifications. The Level 5 Additional Diploma is for Literacy subject specialist teachers and is aimed at candidates who:
  • Have achieved a qualification or equivalent allowing them to teach in the lifelong learning sector but would like to qualify as a specialist teacher in English (Literacy). E.g. DTLLS, PGCE, Cert Ed.
  • Have access to a minimum of 75 teaching practice hours in teaching English (Literacy)
  • Have agreement and support from thier employer.
  • Teach on both a one-to-one or group basis for a variety of learners, across a minimum of two levels.
  • Have a named, subject specialist mentor.
  • It is a requirement that candidates hold a skill specific qualification or the ability to demonstrate level 3 skills in a skill specific area (e.g. English Language); What constitutes this is at the discretion of the delivering centre.
  • All candidates will be expected to sit a pre-entry criteria 'test' which will cover speaking and listening, reading and writing skills prior to being accepted on the course.
  • All candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process.
  • Applications as per normal college procedure.
