Is it right for me?
This unit aims to provide students with a broad'based awareness and understanding of legislation relevant to animal keeping (companion, commercial, conservation and research contexts). Against this underpinning knowledge, the unit will develop the student's ability to consider moral and ethical arguments and constraints. The unit will examine the role of key advocacy and enforcement agencies (eg RSPCA, DEFRA, humane slaughter) and will address issues up to and including the point of death.
What qualifications will I need?
GCSEs in Maths, English and evidence of studying a qualification to S level.
What will I be learning about?
- Legislation in relation to domestic, farm, zoo, research and wildlife species
- Anaesthetic use, medicine use, movement, slaughter, due diligence
- The implementation of legislative provision, the role of advisory lobbying, research organisations and ethical perspectives.
What is involved?
This course will be delivered over 2 terms for 1.5 hours a week.
Where will it take me?
Students may undertake other units within the Animal Behaviour and Welfare or Equine Behaviour and Welfare programme. It is recognised within APL as a level C 20 credit unit (10 credits ECTS)
What materials are required?
Practical clothing, overalls, waterproofs, steel toe'capped safety boots, basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.

How will I be assessed?
There are written assignments and a final 3 hour exam.
