Course aims:
The course is aimed at students wanting to make a progression onto a degree course in art and design. In art and design, this is usually done through a Foundation course. This course is the first year of a two year foundation programme, but can also be taken as a discrete qualification. Students who successfully complete the first year can apply to progress onto the part-time foundation course (B05370)
The majority of learners on the course are returning to education or want a career change. The adult cohort makes the experience very mature and exciting for the learners.
The course suits students who have identified that they want to take their art and design studies much further and develop their thinking and creative potential.

Course content:
Unit 1 Visual recording in art and design
Unit 6 Fine Art Principles
Unit 10 Multidisciplinary work in Fine Art
Unit 11 Generating Fine Art Ideas
Unit 13 Developing and Realising Fine Art Ideas
The course introduces students to visual language in both two dimensions and three dimensions. The main emphasis in the first term is to develop students observational drawing and painting skills which is fundamental to all artists and designers.
Throughout the course there will be a series of workshop inductions such as: Photoshop, Plaster, Printmaking and Textile techniques.
The course provides different strategies for generating ideas and explores the different contexts of art and design practise. This enables students to identify their strengths and see how their works sits within the areas of Fine Art, 3D, Graphics, Illustration, Fashion or Textiles.
Students will need to undertake research into artists and designers to aid their own development. They will also undertake a written assignment that will develop their written, research and contextual skills.
The latter part of the course will be project based and allow students to work in a more independent way establishing and developing their own visual language supported through tutorials, seminars and more specific technical inputs suiting individual needs

Tutors:
A range of enthusiastic & experienced full-time and part-time teaching staff teach on this course. The tutors provide a wide range of professional expertise, skills and industrial experience as practising designers, artists and educators.

Assessment: Assessment will take the form of: formative assessment, peer assessment, end of project reviews and critiques, as well as summative end of unit assessments.

Awarding Body: Edexcel

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 650

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
