Part-time BSc (Hons) Sustainable Land Management

Main features

This course is designed for those who already hold an appropriate Foundation Degree or HND and leads to the award of an honours degree after only one additional year of full-time study. Full-time study includes timetabled College based study for two days each week. (Part-time study includes timetabled College study for one day each week and takes two years to complete).
Land is an essential resource and its effective utilization within rural, urban and transition economies is crucial. Sustainability, concern for the environment, the move away from traditional practices and the seeking of new business opportunities within the rural and related economies are key issues. This course will make you aware of indicators of sustainability in the rural economy and you will be able to assess the impact of existing and new development on the biological, social and economic environment.
There is a strong emphasis on the principles of environmental management, defining and developing the technical and legal approach to the management of production systems and land use. Scientific, technical and business management skills are developed to provide you with the skills to monitor existing practices and to introduce and develop new technologies or enterprises within appropriate economies. The course involves lectures and seminars, augmented by a considerable amount of research work and private study. Research methods and a personal investigative project are key modules that will develop your research, practical numeracy and IT skills.

If you successfully complete this course at an appropriate level you could progress to postgraduate studies at MSc then PhD levels. There are increasing career opportunities in leisure, farming, horticulture, construction and manufacturing organisations as well as in field research, technical and advisory roles.

Entry requirements
An appropriate foundation degree in a relevant subject (normally at merit or equivalent level) or an HND with a merit profile in the final year
GCSE English and mathematics at Grade C or above (or the equivalent)
