The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Building Studies follows a similar format to the full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) course. Designed for students who wish to follow a vocational route to a professional career in the very varied field of construction, students are only required to attend College one day per week, making it ideal for those employed in the industry who wish to expand.

Applicants should have completed: BTEC National Certificate, National Diploma, AVCE, or Advanced GNVQ in a related subject (ideally at merit or distinction profile Mature applicants (those over 21 years of age at the start of the course) wioth other level 3 qualifications such as an Access to HE programme or one A Level pass (or two AS Level passess) in relevant subjects will also be considered . Those without the formal requirements but with relevant industrial experience and /or qualifications are welcomed and will be considered individually

Building Studies Higher National Certificate
The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Building Studies follows a similar format to the full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) course. Designed for students who wish to follow a vocational route to a professional career in the very varied field of construction, students are only required to attend College one day per week, making it ideal for those employed in the industry who wish to expand their theoretical and practical abilities. The College offers five variants of the award:
- BTEC HNC in Building Studies
- BTEC HNC in Architectural Design
- BTEC HNC in Building Surveying
- BTEC HNC in Construction Management
- BTEC HNC in Quantity Surveying
This suite of courses is designed to provide students with a high level of understanding of the design, function, construction and statutory requirements for buildings of all classes, and to prepare them for more advanced employment within the construction industry. The course consists of a combination of core units and optional units that provide appropriate training in each case for technicians employed in architecture, building surveying, building control, building management, or quantity surveying.
Course Content:
The course has been designed to include a significant practical element, which will include:

- Lectures from visiting professionals

- Work experience
- Field trips
- Architectural modelling
- Surveying
Core Units: Students for all awards will undertake the following core subjects in the first year:
- Building law and contract administration
- Construction technology and materials
- Management principles
- Assessment and management of risk
- Construction technology and environmental design
- Project evaluation and design
- Health and safety
Optional Units:
As well as a specialised project unit, you will study eight units from the following:
- Art and design
- Building design and maintenance
- Building conversions and adaptations
- Computer aided design (CAD)
- Construction economics and finance
- Engineering design
- Innovative construction and design
- Quantity surveying practice and management
- Site engineering and surveying
- Measurement, tendering and estimating
- Design studies
- Design history
- IT in property and construction
- Construction management

Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
Progression Routes:
The HNC provides direct entry to the second year of a number of related degree courses and, exceptionally, the third year of some degree courses. It can also be topped-up to the HND qualification with further study.
Career Options:
Recognised nationally and internationally by employers within the construction industry, the HNC may give direct access to a wide range of employment options within such fields as architecture, construction and estate management as well as surveying.
