Is it right for me?
These courses have proved very popular and successful. They offer the keen amateur or professional gardener the opportunity to study horticultural topics of interest and to work towards a recognised qualification.

What qualifications will I need?
Minimum age 16 years. Interest and enthusiasm. Tetanus protection is recommended.

What will I be learning about?
There are twelve theory units to choose from:
  • Sites, soils and cultivation
  • Growing trees, shrubs and hedges
  • Beds and borders
  • Ponds and water features
  • Garden design
  • Garden history
  • Growing fruit
  • Growing vegetables and salad
  • Propagation of plants
  • Plants, pests and diseases
  • Organic gardening
  • Lawns, landscapes and structures

Each unit consists of 5 weeks of taught material and the 6th week being a short written exam.

What materials are required?
Writing materials. Suitable clothing if outdoors.

What is next?
  • RHS General Certificate.
  • BTEC Advanced Certificate in Garden Design.

How will I be assessed?
To obtain City & Guilds Certificate in Gardening, students must pass a short written test in 5 theory units.
