Course Description
All motor vehicle courses are now developed from a suite of modules which allows the College and student to select the most appropriate path in relation to the students intended career.

At Doncaster College we offer the Maintenance and Repair Light Vehicle route, City and Guilds 4101 series. This is divided into 4 levels with a Certificate or Diploma at each level, allowing the course to be completed either as a full-time or part-time course.

Aims of the Qualification

The qualifications have been designed:
  • As stand-alone qualifications
  • To provide valuable accreditation of skills and/or knowledge for candidates not following N/SVQ and apprenticeship programmes
  • To provide some of the knowledge and understanding for the related N/SVQs
  • To allow candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression within the automotive sector
  • To provide a unit framework of bite-size chunks of learning


Course Structure
Consists of 7 modules: Housekeeping, Reducing Risks at Work, Working Relationships, Diagnose and Rectify Chassis Faults, Diagnose and Rectify Engine Faults, Diagnose and Rectify Auxiliary Electrical System Faults and one of the following: Diagnose and Rectify Transmission Faults, Inspect Vehicles or Overhaul Mechanical Units.

Students following an apprenticeship programme will also complete a Level 3 NVQ alongside this programme.

Course Entry Requirements
All learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling.

For any Level 3, entry requirements are Level 2 Maintenance and Repair.

Course Progression
Successful students will have the opportunity to progress onto the Level 4 Maintenance and Repair.

Course Career Prospects
Successful completion will assist your progression in your current employment and also widen opportunities into a supervisor or technician role within the general motor vehicle environment.
