Course Overview This course is aimed at anyone with an interest in the mechanisms of clocks. Learn to dismantle a clock safely, make simple repairs, lubrication, correct re-assembly of strike and chime work and escapement adjustment. Learners will need to bring to the first class: Notebook and pencil, clock movement (preferably not Westminster) basic tool kit - pliers, screwdrivers, tweezers and a container to keep component parts in, and a camera (digital) may be helpful (optional) Please note: If you do not have a suitable clock, then please let us know as soon as possible.

Qualification gained: No formal qualification

Course Content: Students of all levels and abilities are welcome, students who are already beyond the beginning stage will be given help to progress their abilities. We will also look at horology in general. Learners will become familiar with varied means of measuring the passage of time and the underlying principles of mechanical horology. Learners will be able to: Learn the various parts of a clock, what they do and why they do it as well as the names of these parts; safely dismantle a clock movement; make the necessary repairs in order to bring the mechanism back to working order; re-assemble the clock and any associated strike and chimes works; adjust the striking and chiming mechanism for correct operation; undertsand the principle of a clock and a variety of different types of movement; understand the parameters of the escapement and how to optimise for best performance.

Progression: Students may move on to other courses of their choice. Students will acquire a range of practical skills
