This is your first step towards becoming a fully qualified electrician. During these three years you will learn all about the different kinds of circuits commonly encountered by electricians and the different cables and containment systems. You will learn to work at a professional standard and you will gain experience of a wide range of working environments (commercial, industrial, domestic).

About this course

Grade Ds in English and Maths or equivalent. However, we encourage applications from mature students and if you do not hold these grades, then an assessment of your abilities will be made at interview and a place offered on the course will be based on this.
The appreniceship route is only open to people who are employed within the electrical industry.

Course aims:
This is your first step towards becoming a fully qualified electrician. During these three years you will learn all about the different kinds of circuits commonly encountered by electricians and the different cables and containment systems.
You will learn to work at a professional standard and you will gain experience of a wide range of working environments (commercial, industrial, domestic). You will also learn about circuit design and the electrical installation 17a Ed Regulations BS7671:2008.

Facilities for students:
This course is based at the Main Campus for City College in the heart of Brighton.
The Electrical Section is in a purpose-built unit, with modern, well-equipped workshop facilities and classrooms with computers.
There is an excellent cafeteria service in the Tower Block and central Brighton with many cafes etc is on our doorstep. The NVQ portfolio can be built on-line or on hard copy.

Tutors:
The Electrical Department consists of a small, committed and experienced team of lecturers and assessors.
All our staff are qualified and experienced electricians. We have a mixture of full-time and part-time staff.

Assessment: Over the three years you will complete a number of multiple choice exams, written exams and practical exams. You will also produce a portfolio of evidence for your NVQ 3.

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
