Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering

Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?
You will do work-based training with an employer. You are paid a wage. Your apprenticeship will involve working towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), Key Skills and a technical certificate as described below:

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
Usually 4 GCSE's at grade C or above, including Maths, English and a Science.

However, candidates should be able to demonstrate the potential to achieve NVQ Level 3, Key Skills at level 2 and a technical certificate.

WHAT JOB WILL YOU DO?
You are likely to employed as one of the following:
  • Maintenance Craftsperson
  • Machinist/Toolmaker
  • Welder/Plater/Fabricator
  • Engineering Assembly


HOW LONG DOES YOUR APPRENTICESHIP TAKE TO COMPLETE?
An apprenticeship ends when all necessary components have been completed. This might be expected to take between 3 and a half and four years. The pace of your progress will depend on you.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE AFTERWARDS?
You could move on to higher level qualifications and to eventual recognition as Chartered Engineers.

Qualifications required as part of the Apprenticeship Framework

NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION(NVQ)

You will need to achieve a Performing Engineering Operations qualification at Level 2 plus one of the following NVQs at Level 3:
  • Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Fabrication & Welding
  • Engineering Production
  • Engineering Manufacture
  • Engineering Maintenance
  • Engineering Installation & Commissioning
  • Electrical & Electronics Servicing


TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE
You will need to achieve an additional qualification at level 3, for example,
  • BTEC National Diploma in Engineering (Edexcel)
  • Certificate in Engineering 2800 Level 3 (C&G)


KEY SKILLS
You will work to achieve the following Key Skills:
  • Communications Level 2
  • Application of Number Level 2
  • Information Technology Level 2
  • Working With Others Level 2
  • Improving Own Learning and Performance Level 2
