About this course

Candidates should have either 5 GCSE's at grade 'C' or above (including Mathematics, English and Science) or a level 2 GNVQ/NVQ. Mature students with the appropriate engineering background will also be considered. The course is designed to satisfy not only the requirements of apprentice training, but also mature students who require academic qualifications for career progression.

Course Overview The Edexcel National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering is a professional qualification for those in or wishing to work within mechanical engineering. It comprises 12 units and is broadly equivalent to two GCE A levels or the full AVCE award. This is the first year of a two year programme. The core key skills (Information Technology, Application of Number & Communication) can also be achieved. Tuition fees are 1050 per annum.

Qualification gained: Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering at a specified grade (DD, DM, MM, MP,PP)

Course Content: This is a 2-year part time course, the total hours taught are approximately 7 hours per week. The course comprises 12 units: Business Systems For Technicians, Communications For Technicians, Mechanical Principles & Applications, Mathematics For Technicians, Applications of Engineering Materials, Engineering Project, Further Mechanical Principles, Applications of Thermodynamics, Engineering Drawing, CAD and Engineering Design.

Work Experience: It is expected that all candidates will be in full time employment in an engineering related discipline.

Course Assessment: This course in continuously assessed. Each unit is assessed by 4 assignments or short tests. During induction you will receive a 'weekly content and assessment guide' for each unit, detailing the topic area covered each week and when assessments are issued. Submission dates are negotiated between tutors and learners.

Progression: Successful students can progress to a Higher National Certificate or Diploma in an Engineering related subject, which in turn could lead to an appropriate degree.

Homework: During the duration of the course you will be expected to complete, on average, one assignment or test per week. As a rough guide you will be expected to spend 2 hours on each assignment outside of lesson time.

Additional Costs: Engineering tutorial sessions are available on Monday and Tuesday evenings between 18.30 and 20.00 hours, at an additional cost of 90 for the full year. Although course books are not mandatory, tutors will recommend text books for their subjects during induction. Registration fees of approx 140 are required for this course.
