Course Overview This course will build on the knowledge of intermediate learners of English, who have a working knowledge of the language. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: pen, paper and dictionaries (English dictionary and mother-tongue/English dictionary)

Qualification gained: Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) - examination in June 2009.

Course Content: This course is designed for students who have either completed the previous level in the Cambridge scale, which is Preliminary English Test (PET), or have reached the appropriate level. The emphasis will be on developing, expanding and practising all of the skills : reading, writing, listening and speaking, with particular attention given to grammar. The grammar introduced, consolidated and revised, will include all tenses and verb patterns; functions such as expressing preferences, wishes, regrets, etc. Pronunciation will be continually monitored. In addition, there will be considerable emphasis on both formal and informal writing skills, such as letters, articles, reports, stories (narratives) and compositions. The aim of this course is to take students to an upper-intermediate level.

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be tested through informal, ongoing assessment, continuous informal classroom observation, and assessment of tasks set. There will be a mock examination in February. The examination is to be taken in June 2009.

Progression: Learners can progress to the Certificate in Advanced English or IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

Homework: Homework (reading, assignments, essays and other work) is essential and learners will benefit from undertaking home study of approximately 4-6 hours per week.

Additional Costs: Learners will need to buy a course book and this will be discussed at the first class. The examination fees are included in the cost of the course.
