English GCSE GCSE (AQA)

Level: Level 2

Course content:
Day and Evening classes available for young & adult students with existing skills in English who wish to build on those skills.
This course is often required to progress academically or at work. You will be doing writing, reading, speaking and listening. You will improve the fluency and accuracy of your own written expression. This course is for people that have not taken GCSE English previously. In order to join the course you will need to come to an assessment session in the week of 5th September. Assessments take place at the same time as the course.

Course Structure:
The subject is taught for 3 hours per week. An outline of work and an assessment calendar is issued to students at induction. In the first term you will study a collection of short stories from different cultures and traditions. You then move on to study a Shakespeare play. Finally you will work on a personal writing unit. In the second term students will focus on a pre-released anthology of poetry and non-fiction prose, on which you will be examined. In the final term students will concentrate on preparing for the media paper - studying newspapers, advertisements etc. You should expect to take part in group, pair or class discussions and activities during classes. You will be set weekly homework, which may involve reading, writing or preparing for an oral presentation or discussion. Your teacher may also use classroom tests, mock exams and set class work under controlled conditions.

Course resources:
All students have access to our fully equipped state of the art learning centre. This included free internet access.

Assessment:
There is a schedule of assessments for the coursework components - essays and speaking and listening activities. Your teacher will give you an assessment calendar at the beginning of the course. You will sit two 2 hour exams in late May/early June.

Next step:
English GCSE is the most widely known and accepted English qualification, and is useful for progressing to A Levels, university and for certain jobs.
