Fork Lift Truck Operator (Novice)

Course Details

Candidates must successfully complete a theory examination to demonstrate they know and understand the principles of operating a lift truck and the legislation surrounding lifting equipment. Candidates will also need to demonstrate their driving ability and pre-operational vehicle checks by passing a practical examination. The course is accredited by ITSSAR (Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register).

Qualifications required:
No formal educational qualifications are required, but basic maths is useful when working out safe loads. Experience of work in a warehouse or stores environment may be an advantage.

Course length:
3-5 days depending on experience and group numbers.

Hull College Ports and Logistics Training Centre

Start Date:
Training lasts three to five days and takes place in a training centre or on an employer's premises.

Course hours:
18-30 hours depending on experience and group size

Additional info:
To drive a forklift truck unsupervised you must be at least 18. Training can be undertaken before then, but work must be supervised until trainees are 18. For this reason, many employers prefer applicants to be over 18. If a truck is used on public roads, traffic legislation applies and you must hold a driving licence. New entrants or trainees may be asked to undergo a medical examination and aptitude test. Forklift truck operators need to take refresher training and be re-assessed from time to time to ensure that they continue to operate forklift trucks safely. This might be appropriate if operators have not used trucks for some time, they are occasional users or there is a change in their working environment.

Progression:
Candidates may progress to operating fork lift trucks in the 5-15 tonne category.
