Summary:

The foundation diploma in Hair & Beauty Studies will introduce you to a whole new holistic approach into the world of Hair & Beauty. You will take a trip into the past, where you will study how hair and beauty played its part in ancient cultures and explore what has influenced hair & beauty in society today. You will then travel into the present where you will see the science and technology that goes into hair and beauty produce research, design and developments that is driving the sector forward into the future.

This exciting and creative sector offers great job opportunities. You could find yourself working in a spa, styling celebrities and models for magazines photo shoots, running your own salon or even using your skills to support others. If you want to work in the hair and beauty sector, you will need great people skills and have lots of stamina; mostly importantly you will need to be excited and enthusiastic about your learning.

No Entry Requirements - To be accepted onto the Foundation diploma you will need to have a real interest in this industry area and demonstrate the commitment, motivation and enthusiasm to succeed on the course. You will be asked to complete an Interview Task to produce at your interview, to which you will be expected to demonstrate your commitment to the course and a willingness to comply with industry standards adhering to dress code and uniform requirements laid down by the awarding bodies.

Core Skills:
The Diploma in Hair and Beauty will encourage you to develop your skills and become creative as you demonstrate new looks and experiment with products. At foundation Level, you will study all the six industries that make up the hair and beauty sector: Hairdressing, Barbering, and African -Caribbean Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Spa therapy and Nail Services. This will give you a good foundation of understanding of how each of them relates to other industries. You will develop a good level of skill in English, Maths and ICT by studying them in work like situations related to the world of Hair and beauty sector.. Finally you will have the opportunity to experience a minimum of 10 days of real work experience in your chosen industries.

Assessment:
As part of the diploma you will have a choice of 'Additional or specialist learning'

(ASL) - This can be either at the same level as your diploma to give you more skills in both Hairdressing and beauty therapy, or a GCSE in a subject relevant to the diploma to give you more depth of knowledge in an area.

A) a GCSE in a subject relevant to the diploma to give you more depth in an area of interest to you that you might continue with in KS5 ( eg: Business of Art) - taught mainly at the Hewitt School

B) a GCSE or a subject that interests you that is nothing really to do with the diploma (eg; French or history) to give you more breadth and keep your options open. This will be taught at either: Notre Dame high School, CNS or The Hewitt School.

C) A 'Specialist' course at the same level as your Diploma which will give you more skills in hairdressing and beauty Therapy.

Academic Progression:
At the end of your course you will have a better idea of what career pathway you feel you would like to progress onto and how the diploma can help you achieve this - whether that's employment, School, college or another pathway of study route, either start an apprenticeship, or NVQ Level 2. You will have a wide range of options including progressing onto the Higher Diploma (level 2) Diploma in the same or a different sector. You could also progress onto an A's or A Levels.

Career Progression:
The Foundation diploma, will give you an insight into the world of Hair and Beauty to help you choose the appropriate career pathway, with a focus on the Hair and Beauty sector. This could be Employment, Apprenticeship, and Trainee Customer Services assistant, Assistant Receptionist, or a Salon Assistant.

Personal Attributes

As this course combines both Hair and Beauty it is a requirement for you to keep your hair dressed appropriately for your lessons. We will allow only 1 pair of stud ear- rings. Jewellery should be kept to a minimum, you may be asked to remove if appropriate.

Course Work

The course is broken down into 3 components; each will be required to successfully complete every component in order to be awarded the Full diploma. This heavily involves theory based research, presentations, assignments and project work to provide the necessary underpinning knowledge of understanding.

1. Principle Learning - this involves 50% applied learning

2. Generic Learning - this involves work experience. Functional skills, project and PLTS

3. Additional and specialist Learning - this will involve 120 hours of VRQ level 1 units or a GCSE subject in an area of interest to you.
