Course Summary:
This course is tailored to give opportunities of entry to the course for both individuals with traditional entry qualifications and for mature students with work experience, who will be individually assessed for eligibility to enrol.

This course is designed for those already working in the healthcare profession who want to improve their career opportunities and progress to assistant practitioner level. The course integrates work-based learning and college-based learning to deliver a comprehensive academic and professional knowledge. Students must have a work-based supervisor who will take responsibility for overseeing the work-based component of this course.

Current professional routes include a biomedical science route for MLAs, and a clinical physiology-cardiology route for ATOs and equivalent. Other routes may be considered - please contact the course leader to discuss.

Course Details:
The course is delivered by a combination of work-based, computer-based and college-based modules over two years. Students attend college for one day every week allowing delivery and assessment in easy-to-manage bite-sized chunks. Work-based learning will be monitored from and focused on the workplace, but will be designed, scheduled, graded and supported by the college. Significant tutorial and skill support are built into the course.

- Policies, regulations, values and ethics in health care
- Health and safety, infection control and service delivery
- Professional development tailored to each speciality
- Professional and researched case studies related to speciality (double module)
- Cellular and systemic physiology
- Basic biological chemistry and genetics
- Pathology, microbiology and haematology
- Diagnostic techniques
- IT skills and numeracy
- Physics and physiological measurements

Career Progression:
The course offers an opportunity for professional progression. It will also entitle individuals to advanced entry to a BSc programme. In this way the course will allow individuals of variable academic backgrounds to rise up the NHS skills escalator and achieve a wider variety of career opportunities in their profession.

Requirement
All applicants should be working in a hospital clinical department or laboratory and have the support of their respective department. Applicants over 18 years old should have five GCSE passes including science, or their equivalent, with at least one pass at A level or equivalent. Applicants over 21 years old who do not possess any or all of the above entry qualifications will be assessed by the AP(E)L procedures. In all cases, students admitted to the course will have to demonstrate they have the knowledge, skills and aptitudes to benefit from and complete the Foundation Degree course.
