Is it right for me?
There is an ever increasing interest in ' and demand for ' Alternative Horsemanship Courses. This course will provide you with a basis for understanding equine behaviour and applying the principles of this understanding to some of the most important elements of working with horses on the ground. Six different aspects of 'Natural Horsemanship' are covered and are delivered in the following units, each lasting one day. You must complete the first unit in Equine Behaviour and can then enrol on any of the other units individually ' depending on your area of interest. All practical units will take place in a round pen.
What qualifications will I need?
This qualification is ideally suited for those candidates who have a genuine interest and passion in the care and welfare of horses.
What will I be learning about?
If you have ever owned or handled a pushy or bargy horse, you will know that it can be frustrating and even dangerous when a horse treads all over you, pulls away or barges out of a stable. Once you understand how horses are "into pressure" animals (so when you pull, they react by pulling right back), you can learn the techniques for using pressure and release ' to which horses respond instinctively. It then becomes very easy to teach an ill'mannered horse to be light and responsive on the ground. By doing a variety of practical exercises on the ground, you learn the techniques that enable you to place each of your horse?s feet where you want it and make it easy to move them away from your space. You will also tackle a ground maze made of poles with your horse, getting them to walk through and reverse back without touching the poles.
What is involved?
Part time, with the delivery of the 6 units throughout the year, one Saturday per half term.
What is next?
- Further Alternative Horsemanship units,
- BHS specialist equine courses,
- BTEC National Diploma in Horse Studies
- Foundation Degree Equine Behaviour and Welfare.
How will I be assessed?
A College Certificate will be awarded through a Register of attendance.
How much will it cost?
£55
