Course Overview By the end of this course learners will have the ability and confidence to cope with everyday situations such as ordering a meal, booking a hotel room and exchanging basic personal information by concentrating on simple sentences and grammatical structures. Much use will be made of role play in small groups. This course will start in September and run for three terms. We welcome learners with the appropriate level of language in the January and April terms. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: a pen, paper and folder (for handouts). A dictionary is optional but useful.
Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Course Content: This course is for learners who have no previous knowledge of Italian. The main aim is to be able to communicate in everyday tourist situations, both asking for and understanding information. Topics to be covered include personal, home and family information, asking for directions in towns, coping with public transport and timetables, shopping, eating out and booking accommodation. Grammar structures at a basic level will be taught, focusing on the present tense and introducing the past tense. The main language skills to be developed are speaking, listening and reading. Since communication is the main aim, learners work in pairs or groups to practise speaking and listening. Recorded material, such as cassettes, is also regularly used to improve listening skills. Understanding written Italian is based on practical items such as notices, leaflets and signs.
Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.
Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be assessed through informal tests or quizzes, lecturer feedback, observation, audio recording and marked written work.
Progression: Learners can progress to Italian Improver classes, and thereafter Level 2 Italian (GCSE).
Homework: Homework (assignments, essays and other work) is essential and learners will benefit from undertaking home study of approximately 1 hour per week.
Additional Costs: Learners will need to buy a course book and this will be discussed at the first class.
