Course programme

Course content

To gain the MBA you will need to complete the Postgraduate Certificate; Diploma and Masters awards as shown in the attached diagram.
The Postgraduate Certificate stage consists of five modules and has a functional perspective which focuses largely on the internal workings of organizations and their interface with the external envi ronment. The course begins with the Contextual Envi ronment module to understand how the external envi ronment impacts on organizations.
The Finance for Managers module covers the applications of financial accounting needed by managers. These are followed by the functional specialisms of Operations Management and Human Resource Management. Marketing Management introduces the models and concepts used by marketing specialists. This stage runs from September to February of the first year.
The modules at the Postgraduate Diploma stage have a more strategic perspective to help students gain an integrative perspective on the subjects covered in the Certificate stage.
Strategic Management, for example, provides an understanding of the strategic management process by looking at the models and techniques needed to analyze and implement strategy.
International Management explores the range of issues facing managers in organizations that increasingly have to compete in global envi ronments.
Business Innovation and Planning provides insights into innovative business models and entrepreneurship and Organisation Dynamics and Change looks at the change issues prompted by the needs of managing strategically.
This stage also includes the Management Research Methods module which introduces a range of methods and techniques for business and management research in preparation for the Dissertation of the Masters stage. The Diploma stage runs from March of the first year to December of the second year.
The Masters stage comprises three other modules as well as the Dissertation. The Leadership and Management Development module explores the concepts and ideas about effective leadership in organizations and the Strategic Change Management module looks at how strategies work within different contexts.
There is a choice for the third module between the International Business module which explores the implications of this area for strategic decision-making and the Leadership in Action module which provides an applied exploration of the concepts and skills required by leaders.
Please be aware that while we will endeavour to run both modules, the Business School may not to run a particular module if demand is not viable.
The Dissertation involves research of a business or management issue chosen by you and related to your choice of modules. As an individual topic this is self-managed with the help of a dedicated tutor. The module sessions run from September of the second year to March and the Dissertation should be completed by the August.
A Personal Development element will also run throughout the programme to enable you to gain the most from your personal learning.
Assessment
Class sessions will run on Mondays from 2.00pm through to 8.30pm each week. In addition to this there will be elements of self-managed study through flexible learning in order to make the most of your valuable time and avoid wasted time in long vacations.
Assessments include a mixture of coursework and exams, but these will be distributed throughout the programme to avoid clustering and provide you with the best possible opportunity to manage these alongside your other commitments. Tutor help and advice will be available through face to face meetings, telephone and email throughout your time on the course.
