Course Description
If you haven†t studied a language before or your language skills are perhaps â€-out of date†then the NOCN (National Open College Network) Level One Award in Language Skills Qualification is for you. The programme is the first year of a programme which prepares you to cope in a number of differing situations in everyday life, such as meeting people, finding your way around, shopping, etc. You will learn to identify and reproduce written vocabulary and short sentences as well as understand and speak the language using simple set phrases and vocabulary.

The Award year is appropriate for complete beginners.

You will not have to sit an examination for this qualification but you will need to prepare a portfolio of evidence of your studies and progress and you will complete a small number of assessments throughout the course on two specific skills per year. Reading and listening is the focus of assessment in year one and speaking and writing will be assessed in year two, should you continue your studies, when you have more confidence with using the target language.

Languages offered include French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Turkish. Courses may also be available in Greek, Polish, Portuguese and Russian.

These qualifications are intended for use by a wide variety of learners as they provide accessibility with steps towards full achievement. These qualifications are particularly suitable for:
  • Adults in part-time provision
  • Adults in the workplace
  • Adults in full-time learning
  • 16-19 learners in schools and colleges who wish to study a language
  • alongside their academic or vocational qualifications

Course Structure
The NOCN Level 1 Award consists of two of the four communication units. Accreditation for specific skills, as prioritised by the learner or provider can be achieved on the Level 1 Award Programme.

Achievement of units is through internally set, internally assessed and externally moderated assessment activity. Centres devise assessment tasks to meet the specifications for assessment which are detailed for each unit.

Course Entry Requirements
All learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling. The Level 1 Award is aimed at beginners or those completing entry level achievement in specific minority languages. Learners should be 16+.

Course Progression Options
A learner on the NOCN Level 1 programme can achieve an Award for two language skills by studying one year of the programme and progress to the NOCN Level 1 Certificate in Language Skills, where the achievement of the remaining two communication units leads to completion of the full Certificate in Language Skills.

These qualifications encourage progression through the levels and learners successfully completing Level 1 can progress to the NOCN Level 2 Award and Certificate in Language Skills and the NOCN Level 3 Award and Certificate in Language Skills (subject to availability). Alternatively, following completion of Level 2, they may wish to progress to GCSE and then A Level Programmes (subject to availability).

Course Career Prospects
  • Acquisition of a language alongside vocational or academic skills can enhance career prospects in globalised economies. Employers are increasingly seeing language acquisition as an invaluable skill in response to the challenge of flexibility and mobility in the labour market.
