Course Description
If you have studied a language before and your language skills are suitable to communicate simple phrases and vocabulary and you have some ability to converse in past, present and future situations, then the NOCN (National Open College Network) Level Two Certificate in Language Skills Qualification may be appropriate for you. The programme helps you to develop and improve your ability to communicate in a number of differing situations in everyday life, when making travel arrangements and socialising etc. You will learn to further extend language use and incorporate different time frames to identify and reproduce written vocabulary and more complex sentences as well as understand and speak the language using more complex phrases and vocabulary.
If you have some prior knowledge of use of a language incorporating the use of past, present and future phrases, then you may be able to begin with this year of the programme.
You will not have to sit an examination for this qualification but you will need to prepare a portfolio of evidence of your studies and progress and you will complete a small number of assessments throughout the course on two specific skills per year. Speaking and writing is the focus of assessment in this year, when you have more confidence with using the target language.
Languages offered include, Italian and Spanish. Courses may also be available in German, Polish and Turkish.
These qualifications are intended for use by a wide variety of learners as they provide accessibility with steps towards full achievement. These qualifications are particularly suitable for:
- Adults in part-time provision
- Adults in the workplace
- Adults in full-time learning
- 16-19 learners in schools and colleges who wish to study a language alongside their academic or vocational qualifications.
Course Structure
The NOCN Level Two Certificate course works towards achievement of the remaining two communication units which were not accredited on the NOCN Level Two Award Programme. Accreditation is for the specific skills, as prioritised by the learner or provider. Any learner joining the programme at this stage would achieve a Level Two Language Skills Award, as they will only complete two of the four communication skills units.
Achievement of units is through internally set, internally assessed and externally moderated assessment activity. Centres devise assessment tasks to meet the specifications for assessment which are detailed for each unit.
Course Entry Requirements
All learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling. For continuing students, re-enrolment arrangements will be made via your course tutor. The Level Two Certificate is aimed at those learners who have completed the Level Two Award or who have some prior knowledge of the target language at this level of study. For learners who have some prior knowledge, entry would require a placement test to assess the level of ability in using the target language. Learners should be 16+.
Course Progression
A learner can progress to the NOCN Level Three Language Skills Award Programme or to a GCSE course.
These qualifications encourage progression through the levels and learners can progress to the NOCN Level Three Award and Certificate in Language Skills (subject to availability). Alternatively, following completion of Level Two, they may wish to progress to GCSE and then A Level Programmes (subject to availability).
Course Career Prospects
- Acquisition of a language alongside vocational or academic skills can enhance career prospects in globalised economies. Employers are increasingly seeing language acquisition as an invaluable skill in response to the challenge of flexibility and mobility in the labour market.
