Course aims:
Are you interested in a career in Painting and Decorating? The new Level 1 Diploma will be your first step into this industry and will also give you the skills and confidence required to the NVQ qualification
The Level 1 Diploma in Painting & Decorating is designed to prepare people to enter the industry in their chosen craft. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirement of the qualification.
You will develop your skills and knowledge in safe working practice, quantities and communication, erecting and dismantling equipment, paint systems by brush and roller, how to prepare surfaces and specialist decorative finishes.
All the units of training must be completed and. all outcomes must be achieved during the training programme.

Facilities for students:
Students will be based at our City College East campus, where we have extensive and excellent facilities for practical and theory work.
These include: full-size, all-weather and grass, football pitches, indoor
sportshall, gym and dance studio.
For talented sportspeople we have a number of College teams that compete against other local and national colleges.

Tutors:
The Decorative Occupations department is staffed by experienced and enthusiastic tutors who have many years experience on site as tradesmen, as well as teaching experience.
This will enable students to receive excellent training that will help them in their search for employment. All staff are also experienced A1 vocational NVQ assessors.

Assessment: This course is mostly practical work; however, theory is also an important part of the course. There are knowledge and understanding questions to be completed for each unit.
There is also a practical assignment, were you shall prepare for, and paint, flush doors and hang wallpaper. This must be successfully completed, as well as a City & Guilds online Exam at the end of the course.

Pre-entry preparation:
Some background knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the industry would help and students may find it useful to do some background reading using some of the trade journals and press reviews of the industry.
Basic skills in communication and the use of the internet would also be an asset as research forms much of the underpinning knowledge.
Watching construction based programmes and discussion groups would also help in preparing the student with terminology and phrases used in the industry.

Progression and links:
Students may progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Painting & Decorating.
Another important feature of the Qualification is that it provides a progression route towards achieving a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
The Level 1 Diploma in Painting & Decorating will allow students to gain entry to their chosen career of Painting & Decorating and will also give them a good understanding of general construction work.

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
