About this course

Students are required to have CELTA / Trinity TESOL or equivalent and to be currently teaching ESOL Literacies learners. Two references are also required. Entry is by interview. Closing date for applications is Friday 5th September 2008

Aims:
This course is designed as a professional development course for qualified ESOL teachers (CELTA or equivalent) who are currently working with ESOL Literacies learners.

Duration:
20 weeks

Content:
The course consists of the following units:
- The ESOL Literacies learner
- The learning and teaching context
- Strategies for developing basic reading, writing and numeracy skills
- strategies for teaching mixed levels
- assessing learners and measuring progress
- evaluating, adapting and creating ESOL literacies materials
- the use of ICT within an ESOL Literacies context
Assessment
To gain the PDA award, each candidate must deliver a teaching programme to adult ESOL Literacies learner(s) and provide evidence in the form of a portfolio which includes:
- a profile of one adult ESOL Literacies learner
- a completed initial assessment
- an initial learning plan (ILP) agreed with the learner
- a copy of a record of progress agreed with the learner
- a programme of work covering a minimum of four sessions
- an evaluation of the programme including learner feedback
- two examples of materials used and evaluated
- a reflective account of the process of delivering and reviewing the programme
