Principles Of COSHH Certificate
This qualification is aimed at those responsible for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) at work, as well as employees who use hazardous substances in manufacturing, cleaning, healthcare, transport, utilities and offices. It will prepare employees to contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in co-operation with their managers and supervisors. The COSHH regulations require employers to:

  • assess the risks to health from chemicals and establish what controls are needed
  • ;
  • use those controls and ensure that employees use them
  • ;
  • ensure the controls are working properly
  • ;
  • inform employees about the risks to their health
  • ;
  • train employees
  • . Candidates successfully completing this qualification will understand:
  • the scope of hazardous substances in the workplace

  • the range of legislation covering hazardous substances
  • ;
  • how hazardous substances adversely affect health
  • ;
  • methods of identification for hazardous substances

  • sources of guidance available for the safe use of hazardous substances

    Course Content:
    Candidates will be introduced to the hazards associated with substances, the risks and controls available, and what to expect from a COSHH assessment. The course will cover the following subjects:
  • Definition and types of substances hazardous to health in the workplace
  • Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes
  • COSHH assessments and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002

Special arrangements to support candidates with learning difficulties can be made, although we do ask that you make the College aware of any special requirements prior to booking a place on the course. Support may also be available for candidates for whom English is not their first language. Again, we would ask that this be discussed before a place is booked.

Entry Requirements:

Assessment:
Candidates will be assessed by an examination paper consisting of 30 multiple choice questions to be completed in one hour under examination conditions. Candidates who achieve 20 or more correct answers will pass the examination and receive a certificate. The results will take approximately two weeks to process.

Progression Routes:
Candidates successfully achieving both this and the CIEH Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification may progress to the CIEH Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace offered by the College.
