Course Overview This course is aimed at learners who wish to communicate with deaf people, either as professionals or as part of their services to clients or customers. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: writing materials. Course books are as follows; Signs Make Sense- 11 (Cath Smith 0-285-65083-1) and the Easy Way Guide to Signing- 8.50 and Start to Sign 4th edition 20.00. All exams will be held at Newbury college.

Qualification gained: Certificate in British Sign Language Level 1. All exams will be held at Newbury college.

Course Content: The course covers the following: Unit 1: Meeting people : greetings, introductions, fingerspelling, asking for clarification and repetition, asking and responding to simple questions, asking for and giving information about oneself and other people, numbers- BSL numbering system, describing and asking about the weather,travel and transport modes. Unit 2 : At Home : People, animals and objects, understanding information about size, colour and shape as well as placement/location, using numbers, giving, asking for and understanding information about age, time, money and calendar, interests & activities, hobbies, interests, sports, leisure and entertainment. Unit 3 : Exchanging information : giving, asking for and understanding information about school, college and work, work places, work people, school and college people signs. Everyday objects, bills and utilities. Conversational practice, finger spelling and signing practice, the use of rhetorical statements.

Work Experience: You do not need to be in relevant work.

Course Assessment: Your progress will be assessed by lecturer and peer feedback. There will be three assessment sessions given by the lecturer on role play, comprehension and narrative signing. At the end of the course there is a 25 minute exam.

Progression: You may progress onto Level 2 BSL or deaf studies courses. There are opportunities for voluntary work with deaf children and deaf clubs.

Homework: It is essential that you practice outside of class for 1-2 hours a week. Assignments will be given during the course.

Additional Costs: Text books will be required at a cost of approximately 25.50, and these will be discussed at the first class. There is an optional educational visit to the Corn Exchange to see a signed pantomime, at a cost of approx 11.00
