AS SociologyCourse Outline
AS Sociology encourages students to examine the relationship between the personal and the social, particularly in terms of the development of an individual?s identity with respect to gender, ethnicity, class, age, locality and nation. Because the course includes both contemporary as well as more traditional topics in Sociology it is suitable for students from a wide variety of age groups and prior educational backgrounds, including those engaged in lifelong learning. The course may be studied on a full and part time basis.

Entry requirements
Although there is no formal qualification required to study AS Sociology a good standard of written English is desirable. Some students would have already gained a knowledge and understanding of relevant areas through their study of Sociology at GCSE.

What will I study?
The AS course consists of three units: SOC1 Acquiring Culture - Families & Culture; Youth Culture and Community & Culture. SOC2 Social Research. SOC3 Understanding Culture - Education; Health and Religion.

How will I be assessed?
The assessment will include 3 examinations which can be taken in January and June.

Career Opportunities & Progression
The course will provide a suitable foundation for the A2 Sociology course and other related areas of study, for example caring, business studies, marketing, management or media. It also prepares students for future employment and Higher Education.
