Course Overview This course is for beginners who wish to write web pages from inception with very little or no experience. By the end of the course learners will have developed their own linked web pages. Learners should bring a pen, paper and USB memory stick to the lessons

Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.

Course Content: The course covers the following: a brief history of the World Wide Web, uses and evaluation of websites, web development tools, notepad and HTML, website planning - including web maps and web logs, web browsers - including Internet Explorer and Netscape, the web development language - HTML, HTML tags, writing web pages, linking web pages, web page testing, forms, tables and graphics. HTML editing using Microsoft Front Page and review of other web authoring tools such as Publisher, Dreamweaver and Word.

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: There is no formal assessment but learners will be monitored throughout the course by the lecturer and there will be quizzes/informal tests and marked written work.

Progression: Learners can progress to the Intermediate or advanced Web Design Workshops. There is currently a shortage of competent web developers in industry, therefore, there are employment opportunities.

Homework: Homework related to the Web site being designed is essential and learners will benefit from undertaking home study of approximately 1 hour per week.

Additional Costs: It is advisable that the learners have a text book. HTML Second Edition by Shasha Vodnik ISBN 0-619-01770-8 (21) or HTML Second Edition by Elizabeth Reding and Sasha Vodnick ISBN 0-619-01880-1 (35), available on the Thomson Learning website, are recommended. Please do not purchase either book before discussing them with the lecturer at the first session.
