Course Overview This course is for those who wish to know more about wines and spirits from around the world. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: pen and paper. Optional - learners might purchase a box of 6 tasting glasses from the lecturer for 10.

Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.

Course Content: By the end of the course learners should be able to assess and identify basic wine styles and discuss the merits and faults of any wines and also have the confidence to express their opinions. Learners will be introduced to the basic principle of Viticulture and Viniculture and the history of wine production worldwide. They will know how to taste wine using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting and how to record and discuss the results with confidence. Learners will be able to identify basic grape varieties and regional styles, match wine styles with foods and be able to buy wine in restaurants, wine shops and supermarkets with confidence. They will also learn how to store wine, open bottles and how to serve wine. The course will also cover Health & Safety and Drinking & Driving - the number of units allowed under Health & Safety guidelines and the laws relating to and the dangers of Drinking & Driving. Term A: 1. Introduction to wine and wine tasting, Spain; 2. Australia; 3. Loire Valley; 4. South Africa; 5. Germany; 6. Bordeaux; 7. Armagnac, Cognac, Calvados; 8. Chile; 9. Lesser known wine regions; 10. Quiz and blind tasting. Term B: 1.Introduction to wine and wine tasting, Italy; 2. New Zealand; 3. Portugal; 4. Argentina; 5. Alsace;6. Whiskey, Gin, Rum; 7. Eastern Europe; 8. Cotes du Rhone; 9. Eastern Mediterranean; 10. Quiz and blind tasting. Term C: Introduction to wine and wine tasting, Champagne; 2. USA; 3. England; 4. Fortified Wines; 5. Vin de pays; 6. Beer & Cider, etc; 7. Burgundy & Beaujolais; 8. Cotes du Rhone & Provence; 9. SW France; 10. Quiz and blind tasting.

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be tested through quizzes/informal tests, observation and blind tasting.

Progression: Learners can progress laterally to similar wine appreciation courses.

Additional Costs: There is an inclusive materials fee. If possible a visit to a wine growing region might be organised.
