An exciting practical course that will provide you with the basic skills necessary for a wide range of performance and acting disciplines.
During the course, you will be studying a range of practical and contextual units. These are designed to give a balanced understanding of theatre, its history and influences.
The course concentrates particularly on the practical skills needed to produce quality performance. These will include improvisation, devising skills, voice and movement work.

Entry requirements- Level 1 literacy qualification
- Minimum of four GCSEs at grade D or above
- Performance experience
- Audition and drama workshop
All applicants progressing from a Level 1 programme must be able to show a high level of commitment, willingness and teamwork.
You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.
Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

How long is the course?One year.
Location- Derby Road
You will be assessed through a range of methods including assignments, practical exercises and reflective diaries. You will also be evaluated on your contribution to performance productions. Part of this course will be externally assessed through a final major project.
What does the course lead to?On successful completion of the course you could choose to proceed onto further study in performing arts, which may lead to Higher Education courses at universities or drama schools. A wide variety of careers within the performing arts industry would also be an option upon completion of the course.
What will I study?Example modules include:
- Devising drama
- Performing scripted plays
- Physical theatre
- The performing arts industry
- Developing acting skills and techniques
It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
