Course Overview
This is a Mechanical Engineering course aimed at those who are employed and require a level 2 qualification in basic Engineering skills.

Learn a wide range of engineering skills on this course, which covers practical topics such as milling, turning and benchfitting. In addition you will cover technical theory, practice, engineering materials and marking out in preparation for manufacturing.

Course Structure
This programme is delivered over two years, one day per week in the workshops/classroom.Theory is studied to suit the individual student.

This course is also offered by distance learning. and will cover the following practical topics:

  • Working Safely
  • Working with Others
  • Using Technical Information
  • Practical Milling
  • Practical Turning
  • Bench fitting
  • Marking Out


This is all evidenced by producing a portfolio.

Qualification Aims
Successful completion of this course may lead to further study on VRQ courses within the Apprenticeship framework.

Assessments/Examinations
There will be continuous assessment throughout the course including practical assignments and theory. There is no formal written exam.

  • Steel Toecap Boots
  • Overalls (may be provided)


Free tuition is available to those in receipt of certain means tested benefits or to their un-waged dependants.
